A side-by-side comparison conducted at a Taco Bell location in Manhattan on Monday determined that the Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch lacks the unsubtleties of the original, though it is decidedly still good. While the addition of a second helping of seasoned beef is, undoubtedly, a good thing, its positioning inside the Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch serves to mitigate the crunchiness of an inner taco shell already strained by its proximity to the melty cheese. The Cheesy Gordita Crunch is something close to a perfect Taco Bell thing, a delightful combination of classic Taco Bell flavors - the greasy, salty, peppery, weirdly orangeish beef, the soft warm gordita shell, the gooey cheese, the creamy, tangy ranch sauce - and so attempting to improve upon it comes with great risk: Can something billed as a Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch actually provide twice as much cheesiness, gorditatude, and crunch? The distinction between the original and the new Double version is simple: Taco Bell found a new place to cram seasoned beef, so there’s now seasoned beef, along with the familiar melted three-cheese blend (MexiMelt cheese, to the longtime Taco Bell enthusiasts) between the gordita flatbread and the crunchy taco inside. But I am here because Taco Bell somehow sought to improve upon one of the greatest and most revered Taco Bell things, the Cheesy Gordita Crunch, with the new Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch, and such an effort should not be taken lightly. Taco Bell constantly debuts new menu items and brings back old ones, like the much-heralded Nacho Fries that recently returned to participating Taco Bell restaurants.
